General Information of Mehsana Breed

  • Mehsana Buffalo is well known water buffalo breed of India.
  • Mehsana Buffalo is natural cross of Murrah and Surati Buffalo breed.
  • Adaptability: Perform well in semi-intensive systems and are relatively heat-resistant, though yield drops above a THI of 78.
  • Mehsana Buffalo Population 36,25,125 as per 20th Livestock Census, GOI.

Mehsana Buffalo native tract: Mehsana Buffalo found in the districts of Gujarat like Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad and Panchmahal

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Intermediate to Murrah & Surti buffalo
  • Compact and large body with smaller legs
  • Black hairy coat
  • Thick horns, curved inward (less than Murrah)
  • Prominent and bulging eyes
  • Weight: Female 375 to 455 Kg, Bull-475
  • Forehead: Wide with slight depression
  • Face: Long & Straight
  • Muzzle: Wide muzzle & wide open nostril.
  • Eyes: prominent, black and bright, bulging from their sockets with folds of skin on upper eye lids.
  • Ears: Medium size & pointed at tip
  • Horns & Body color: Intermediate to Murrah & Surti.
  • Skin: Thin, Soft & pliable with scanty hair.
  • Neck: Thin & long.
  • Body: Long & Deep with wedge shape appearance.
  • Tail: Medium thick, long & black or brown switch.
  • Udder: Well developed & set.
  • Teats: Fairly thick, long & pliable.
  • Milk vein: Prominent

Milk Composition & Yield

  • Average Lactation Yield: Around 1,986 kg (ranging 598-3,597 kg).
  • Milk Fat%: High, averaging around 6.83%, with a range of 5.2% to 9.5%.
  • Total Solids: High, around 18.8% in raw milk samples.
  • Lactation Period: Approximately 270-300 days. 

 

Other Traits

  • Ageat First Calving: Around 42-48 months (42.6 months average).
  • Breeding: Regular breeding habits.
